quixotic, adj. “[1] extravagantly chivalrous or romantic; visionary, impractical, or impracticable. [2] impulsive and often rashly unpredictable” (Dictionary.com) (pronounced kwik-SOT-ik).
This word is named after the famous (or infamous?) Don Quixote, a classic character (and book) created by author Miguel de Cervantes. You can guess what kind of guy the don was… Frankly, I wouldn’t mind sitting back and watching him make life decisions and learning what not to do.
Have you ever had a quixotic moment? I’d have to say one of mine was when I had the biggest crush on the pet store guy. He was a dashing young man (we’ll call him Don) who worked at our local pet shop. It was love at first sight for both of us, and once I discovered him, I found every excuse to go to that pet store (please note I was only thirteen). Alas, it was a short-lived affection, as I soon came crashing down from cloud nine upon discovering the dark-haired, brown-eyed caretaker of animals was interested in someone else (and he wasn’t sensitive about letting me know!). Nevertheless, Don was my second love, and I was quite head over heels.
Thankfully that is done now. I would like to say I am more sane at my current age, but my sister would tell you differently. But enough about me. A more realistic and well known example of quixotic can be found in most Disney films:
Prince Edward from the movie “Enchanted” is the perfect example of someone who is quixotic. Actually, most Prince Charmings are. But that’s okay—that’s what makes them Prince Charmings!
