Today we have a special guest, Fiona Cooke Hogan, a writer and blogger from Ireland. If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to experience this beautiful country, read her artistic portrait below!
And be sure to check out her byline at the end.
The View Out Of My Window
Out of my kitchen window there is an ancient hazel ditch, an overgrown hedge that is also filled with rowan, elder and willow.
From early morning until late on a summer’s night I hear the chirp and chatter of a million tiny birds; they call and sing to me as I sit on the deck that runs along the side of the house. And I stay out in the twilight, a wrap around my shoulders, watching the leaves darken and the shadows fall until the first stars come forth.
Many’s the night the barn owl swoops overhead, silent but for the whoosh of his wings. Ghostly in his hunting alongside the bats, whose tiny shapes dart and flutter about the shrubs and trees.
In a month, we will harvest the already budding elder flowers for cordial. Later the sloe berries will be picked and bottled for the sloe gin, a Christmas favourite. There will be blackcurrants and hazelnuts if we’re lucky.
But now, I just like to listen to the sweet sounds of the birds, the endless rustle and flight, the tweets and the trills. The sounds of the summer from my own private place.
